New to Canvas? This course provides the information you need to start using Canvas, NMSU's learning management system. After an overview of NMSU processes and the Canvas user interface, we'll work to learn the basics Canvas. The course will provide instructors with an orientation covering Canvas Announcements, Files, Syllabus, Modules, Assignments, Discussions, and Quizzes, as well as key integrations like Zoom and Canvas Studio. This is the first course in the Faculty Professional Development series from Academic Technology.

This course will introduce you to Canvas features and functions, as well as academic technology resources available to you. Expect to spend approximately 20-30 minutes completing each module. Each module will have a quiz to check for understanding. An 85% is required in order to earn a badge.

Learning Canvas is an essential component to your success as an educator at NMSU. Introduction to Canvas is an overview of the Learning Management System (LMS) and the academic technology resources available to you. It is the foundation for quizzes, assignments, modules, rubrics, DesignPLUS, and more!

This is the first step in developing and delivering quality course sites to your students.

By the end of this course, users will be able to: 

  1. Log into Canvas, navigate the Canvas user interface (global navigation), update your user profile, account settings, calendar, and notification settings
  2. Maximize predictable course design principles to make course content easy to find for students to utilize (course navigation, homepages, modules, announcements)
  3. Recognize and explain the difference between the various assessment tools in Canvas (assignments, discussions, and quizzes) 
  4. Explain the purpose and recommended use case for Zoom in Canvas and Canvas Studio
  5. Locate self-help resources and submit support requests
